How to Set a Live Photo as Wallpaper on iPhone

Set a Live Photo as your Lock Screen wallpaper to see it animate whenever you wake your iPhone.

To make your own Live Photo wallpaper with LivePix, see How to Make a Live Photo Wallpaper.

Set as Wallpaper happens in the iPhone Photos app, outside LivePix. LivePix creates and saves the Live Photo to your library first; the steps below begin after that.

Step 1: Open a Live Photo

Open the Live Photo you want to use in the Photos app. Make sure LIVE appears in the upper-left corner, then tap the Share button at the bottom left.

Step 2: Select “Use as Wallpaper”

Find and tap Use as Wallpaper in the share menu. If it is not visible, swipe left across the row of actions to find it.

Step 3: Turn On Motion

Tap the Live Photo button at the bottom left. A crossed-out icon means motion is off; a play icon means it is on.

Step 4: Add the Wallpaper

Adjust the image, then tap Add in the upper-right corner. Follow the on-screen prompt to choose Set as Wallpaper Pair, or select Customize Home Screen to use a different Home Screen style. Either option keeps the animated Lock Screen.

Lock and wake your iPhone to view the motion effect.

What If Motion Is Not Available?

Live Photos created with LivePix or captured directly on an iPhone may show Motion Not Available, preventing the Lock Screen animation. Keep these points in mind:

  • Use steady footage: Videos with minimal camera movement and fewer scene changes are more likely to work well as Live Photo wallpapers.
  • Turn off Low Power Mode: Low Power Mode may hide or disable the Live Photo motion button. Turn it off, then try setting the wallpaper again.
